A police officer stationed at the Madina Police Station, identified as Sgt. Mathew, has allegedly assaulted staff of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) following the disconnection of power at his residence in Pantang over an outstanding bill of GH¢13,191.69.
The incident reportedly occurred when ECG officials, accompanied by a Criminal Investigations Department (CID) officer, visited the premises to enforce the disconnection. The officer is said to have reacted angrily after being filmed during the exercise, leading to the alleged assault on the ECG personnel.
According to ECG officials, the residence has been disconnected more than six times in recent months due to non-payment of electricity bills. Despite these actions, Sgt. Mathew allegedly reconnects the power supply shortly after the task force leaves.
ECG further indicated that the electricity meter is registered in the name of Mrs. Mary Aboase, although the nature of her relationship with the officer remains unclear.
The company says the officer’s conduct has left its staff distressed and fearful for their safety while carrying out their duties. Additionally, he is accused of seizing electricity cables belonging to the company.
The incident has raised concerns about the safety of utility workers and adherence to regulations governing electricity usage. Authorities are yet to provide official details on any investigations or disciplinary action regarding the matter.
