The Minister of Interior, Muhammad Muntaka Mubarak has assured the leadership of the Christian Council of Ghana that the government and security agencies will remain strictly neutral and treat crime as crime, regardless of who is involved.
The assurance was given when the Minister and Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno continued their series of engagements with religious leaders.
The meeting in Accra followed inflammatory social media comments that authorities say threaten Ghana’s peace and social cohesion.
Addressing the Council, Muntaka said the purpose of the visit was also to thank the Christian Council for helping maintain peace in Ghana.
“So our mission here today is very simple, to thank you for all you’ve done and hopefully continue to do to help stabilize our country and make sure our country is peaceful. And to also assure you that we are going to remain neutral,” he stated.
He emphasised that both he, his team, the board, and the security leadership were committed to impartiality. “I want to assure you between me, the team here, and the board that…in all this, we shall remain neutral and treat crime as crime, no matter who is involved. That assurance, please take from us that our neutrality will ensure that it is beyond doubt.
“We will not be blindfolded by personal interest or personal likes or dislikes… to our constitutional obligation of Article 296 of the Constitution, where when it imposes discretion in you, you are mandated to be fair and candid.”
Muntaka said the public could take reassurance of this neutrality from him as Minister of the Interior, the Police Service under the Inspector-General of Police, and the other security agencies. While noting that he was not fully in charge of the Ghana Armed Forces, he pointed out that he sits on the Armed Forces Council and reiterated the government’s stance.
“I want to assure you that under this government we will treat crime as crime no matter who is involved,” he added.
The engagement forms part of broader efforts by the Interior Ministry and the police to strengthen collaboration with Christian leaders in addressing provocative rhetoric, promoting responsible public discourse, and preventing tensions that could undermine national peace.
