President-elect John Dramani Mahama has expressed gratitude to President Nana Akufo-Addo for his cooperation in ensuring a smooth transition to his administration.

He said the briefings his side of the joint transition team  received in the last few weeks had made them adequately for government.

It will be recalled that moments after the Electoral Commission declared Mr. Mahama the victor in the 2024 presidential election, President Akufo-Addo called his former political opponent to congratulate him and pledge  his commitment to an orderly transition.

The two sides subsequently established a transition team as mandated by the Presidential Transitions Act (2012) which was co-chaired by Chief of Staff at the presidency, Frema Osei Opare and Julius Debrah, a close Mahama aide.

Speaking to the president ahead of a scheduled tour of the Jubilee House, Mr. Mahama said he was thankful to the outgoing head of state’s cooperation in upholding the democratic ritual of a smooth transition.

“I want to thank you and your side of the transition team for what has been a cordial and smooth transition. We do think that we are quite ready with the information we have to start work immediately when we finish the inauguration tomorrow,” he said at the Jubilee House.

Following their brief interaction, President Akufo-Addo accompanied the president-elect on a tour of a building quite familiar to him.

During his time in office, Mr. Mahama moved to the Jubilee House, referred to as Flagstaff House, after he was inaugurated in 2013.

His former boss, President John Atta Mills had declined to move into the building when he took over in 2009, although President John Agyekum Kufuor had given him a tour of the facility.

Only Mr. Mahama and President Akufo-Addo have occupied the building as heads of state since it was designated as the seat of government over a decade ago. The previous heads of state worked at the Christianborg Castle in Osu.
