Seven of the nine miners who were fatally shot during a clash at AngloGold Ashanti’s (AGA) concession in Obuasi have been buried. The deceased, all Muslims, were laid to rest on Tuesday, January 21, in accordance with Islamic rites.
The burials took place amid heightened tension in the community following the tragic incident, which involved the miners’ alleged illegal invasion of the AGA concession.
Among the four injured miners receiving treatment at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, one is reported to be in critical condition after a bullet pierced a vital part of his body.
President John Dramani Mahama has ordered an investigation into the shooting, promising a thorough inquiry to ensure accountability and justice for the victims.
The Ashanti Regional Minister-Designate, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, along with executives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has been engaging with the families of the deceased, local youth, and AGA management to de-escalate tensions and foster peace in the area.
Addressing the youth, Dr. Amoakohene emphasized the government’s commitment to resolving the issue. “The President has given his assurance of pursuing the matter to its meaningful conclusion. We urge everyone to remain calm and not take the law into their hands. Security officers are here to protect us, not harm us. A thorough investigation will ensure such tragic losses do not occur again,” he said.
Security Measures and Community Impact
Security has been reinforced in Obuasi to prevent further disturbances, though schools remain closed as a precautionary measure. Local authorities are working to restore normalcy in the community.
The incident is the latest in a series of confrontations between illegal miners and AngloGold Ashanti, stemming from repeated attempts by youth in the area to prospect for gold on the company’s concession. These disturbances have persisted for years, highlighting the need for a sustainable solution.
Ongoing discussions among stakeholders aim to address the root causes of the unrest and establish long-term strategies to prevent future clashes.
The incident has reignited calls for better management of illegal mining activities and improved relations between mining firms and host communities to ensure mutual benefit and harmony.
