The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has officially confirmed the withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger from the regional bloc, effective January 29, 2024.
In a press statement, ECOWAS acknowledged the withdrawal but emphasized its commitment to maintaining regional solidarity and minimizing disruptions for citizens and businesses in the affected countries.
To ensure continuity, ECOWAS has instructed relevant authorities to “ Recognize national passports and identity cards bearing the ECOWAS logo for citizens of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger until further notice.
Permit the trade of goods and services from the three countries under the ECOWAS Trade Liberalization Scheme (ETLS) and investment policies.
Allow citizens of the affected countries to continue enjoying visa-free movement, residence, and establishment in accordance with ECOWAS protocols.
Provide full cooperation and support for ECOWAS officials from the three countries in their official duties’’.
ECOWAS stated that these measures would remain in place while discussions continue on the future of its engagement with Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger. A structured dialogue has been established to determine the modalities of their relationship moving forward.
The regional bloc assured businesses and individuals that these arrangements aim to prevent confusion and economic disruption during this transition period.
The withdrawal of the three countries follows previous announcements citing governance and sovereignty concerns.
ECOWAS is expected to provide further updates on its engagement with the departing nations in the coming months.
