Former Defense Minister, Dominic Nitiwul, has called on Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare to abandon what he describes as “crowd-pleasing tactics” and focus on bold, loyal leadership.

Speaking during an interview with Bonohene on Accra-based Asaasepaye FM, Nitiwul urged the IGP to reassess his approach to managing the Ghana Police Service, warning that his current strategy could harm both his legacy and the institution he leads.

“I have worked with the IGP for over three years now. He has his ups and downs, but I feel if you are IGP, you should be bold and loyal. Avoid crowd-pleasing,” Nitiwul stated firmly.

“Heading an institution like the police service with crowd-pleasing tactics will destroy the service.”

Nitiwul acknowledged that while Dr. Dampare has made significant efforts in his role as IGP, dissatisfaction is growing across political lines. He noted that members of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) and even some from the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) have expressed concerns about Dampare’s leadership approach.

“A lot of people wanted him to be IGP at first, but it is no longer so,” Nitiwul revealed. “I told him people are complaining. Even within the NPP, many are unhappy with what is happening. And when you talk to some NDC members, they say it too.”

Nitiwul didn’t mince words when addressing the potential consequences of Dr. Dampare’s current leadership style.

He warned that failing to adapt could leave the IGP isolated in retirement, with little support from those who once championed his appointment.
“If he doesn’t change his tactics, it will not help him,” Nitiwul cautioned.

He added “When he retires, he may not even have friends who will attend his invitations.”

Just recently, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, became the talk of the town in Ghana. In a heartwarming and unexpected moment, he was spotted playing draughts on a quiet Sunday morning with some fellow Ghanaians. He was accompany by Appiah Stadium, a well-known and passionate supporter of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Some netizens described it as “This simple yet powerful gesture showcased Dr. Dampare’s ability to connect with ordinary Ghanaians, transcending political affiliations and reminding everyone of the unifying power of shared experiences.

Let us not forget that IGP Dr. George Akuffo Dampare was appointed by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the former President of the Republic of Ghana. Interestingly, the very government that entrusted him with this critical role lost the December 7th General Election to John Dramani Mahama.
