The leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Ashanti Region has condemned attempts to stoke tribal tensions over Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executive (MCE) appointments, particularly in the Mampong Constituency.
In a statement released Thursday, on behalf Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene by his communications aid Hussein Ibrahim addressed what he described as a “deliberate attempt” by certain individuals to incite tribal sentiments and spread misinformation aimed at tarnishing his reputation and that of President John Dramani Mahama.
“Some aggrieved aspirants are peddling falsehoods, claiming that the regional leadership manipulated the vetting process to favour particular individuals,” the statement said.
“These accusations are not only false but are rooted in hatred and prejudice.”
The Minister’s aid clarified that following the regional vetting process, only three names were forwarded to the NDC National Secretariat for consideration.
While some aspirants filed appeals, he emphasized that it is within the sole prerogative of the national leadership to accept or modify those submissions.
He dismissed allegations that additional names were “smuggled” into the list, asserting that the regional process was conducted with transparency, equity, and fairness.
“The President has not made any MDCE appointments in the Ashanti Region as of now,” Mr. Ibrahim added, urging party members to disregard rumors and await official announcements.
The statement also raised concerns over what Mr. Ibrahim termed a “worrying trend” of tribal agitation and misinformation in constituencies including Kumawu, Kwadaso, Atwima Nwabiagya South, and Mampong.
He warned that such actions could jeopardize the confirmation process of yet-to-be-appointed MDCEs.
Calling for calm and unity, Mr. Ibrahim encouraged party faithful to trust in the leadership of the President and support decisions that serve the broader interest of the NDC and the people.
“Let us not allow parochial interests and divisive rhetoric to derail the gains we are collectively making,” he concluded.
The statement comes amid heightened political tension as the party prepares to announce new local government appointments across the region.
