Information from a reliable source indicates that former President Akufo Addo is engaging in serious underground machinations aimed at getting the party to postpone the upcoming National Delegates Conference slated for July 19 in Accra.
According to reports, the former President, who is currently holidaying in the United Kingdom is leaving no stone unturned in his bid to control and exert his influence in the party by lobbying members of the Council of Elders, most of whom happen to be his allies to vote against the impending conference.
Sources have disclosed that some members of the Council of Elders, through the influence of Nana Akufo Addo, have already submitted a petition to NEC calling for the postponement of the National Conference, citing reasons of the absence of some key personalities including he (Akufo Addo) and former President J. A Kufuor.
Interestingly, though former President Kufuor has agreed to join the conference via Zoom, cronies of President Akufo Addo insist he must be physically present for the conference, hence their reason for calling for the postponement.
The situation, according to reports, is breeding tension amongst the rank and file who are not happy with former President Akufo Addo.
Some are wondering why former President chose to travel outside the country knowing very well the party had such an important exercise ahead of it next week.
A constituency executive, Bright Asiedu wonders why Nana Akufo Addo and his allies are burnt on holding control over the party.
“I honestly don’t know why President Akufo Addo is doing this at this particular point in time when the party rather needs unity and inclusiveness to prosecute the 2028 agenda ” He noted.
Meanwhile, the Planning Committee, chaired by former Bekwai MP has confirmed that all is set for the special delegate conference to come off on 19th July. This will allow for the party to prepare adequately for the Akwatia by-election in August. Opinion sampled shows the NEC will throw out this petition as it does not resonate well with party members.
