There is relief for more than 6,200 teachers who have worked between six and nine months without salaries, as the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced that Cabinet has approved their immediate absorption into the Ghana Education Service (GES).

The announcement follows a recent demonstration by the affected teachers at the premises of the Ghana Education Service and the Ministry of Finance, where they demanded the payment of nearly a year’s salary arrears.

Speaking at the press launch of the 2025 Triennale of the Association for the Development of Education in Africa (ADEA), the education Minister  said the decision underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring that trained educators are fully engaged to enhance learning outcomes across the country.

“A few weeks ago, the Director-General and I received a petition from teachers who were unhappy about working for several months without pay. I am happy to announce that Cabinet has approved the absorption of 6,200 of these teachers, and the process will begin shortly,” the Education Minister stated.

Mr. Iddrisu further revealed that government has also granted approval to the Minister of Finance to release about GH₵1.1 billion to facilitate the absorption of both health workers and teachers whose appointments had been delayed due to financial clearance challenges.

He explained that the move aims to prevent future protests and picketing by teachers and nurses over salary arrears.

“This intervention is meant to bring lasting relief and stability to the education and health sectors,” he added.

The development has been widely welcomed by education stakeholders, who have long called for prompt payment and regularization of employment for newly recruited teachers to sustain morale and improve teaching quality in public schools.
