Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang on Saturday reaffirmed the government’s dedication to advancing sports development in Ghana as she represented President John Dramani Mahama at the 50th Anniversary celebration of the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG)
During the ceremony, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang received a special award on behalf of the President and expressed deep gratitude for SWAG’s decades-long contribution to promoting Ghanaian athletes and chronicling the nation’s sporting milestones.
She praised the Association for its unwavering commitment to motivating athletes to uphold high standards, noting that Ghana continues to produce exceptional talent—many of whom have risen from modest backgrounds to achieve national and continental recognition.
The Vice President outlined government’s vision of using sports as a strategic tool for national development, emphasizing the need for deliberate investment, robust policies, modern facilities, and a strengthened grassroots system that includes all young people, whether in school or outside formal academic structures.
She disclosed that the Ministry of Sports and Recreation has undertaken a comprehensive review of its priorities to upgrade sporting facilities in line with the national reset agenda.
The event also included a solemn moment in memory of victims of the recent stadium stampede. Prof. Opoku-Agyemang said the tragedy underscores the urgent need to enhance safety measures, improve infrastructure, and tighten crowd management across sporting venues nationwide.
She extended congratulations to all athletes, coaches, referees, journalists, and administrators who were honoured, applauding their dedication and the inspiration they continue to provide to millions of Ghanaians.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang also commended SWAG for reaching its golden jubilee, describing the Association’s 50-year journey as indispensable to shaping Ghana’s sporting story, advocating for athletes, and preserving narratives that form an essential part of the nation’s identity.
