The Paramount Chief of Nsuta in the Sekyere Central District, Nana Asamoah Gyamfi Sekyere II, has issued a directive to all sub-chiefs (odikro) within the Nsuta Traditional Area to strictly enforce communal labour in their respective communities.
According to the chief, communal labour traditionally known as (asafo dwuma) remains an important tool for community development and cleanliness.
He emphasized that chiefs have both the cultural mandate and legal backing to organize such activities.
Ghana’s Chieftaincy Act, 2008 (Act 759) recognizes the authority of chiefs in mobilizing their communities for communal labour.
The Act, particularly Section 63(e), originally stipulated that deliberately refusing to take part in a communal exercise organized by a chief without reasonable cause could constitute an offense.
Speaking to his sub-chiefs, Nana Asamoah Gyamfi Sekyere II stressed that participation in communal labour is not optional.
He urged community leaders to ensure full compliance and to present individuals who refuse to participate without a valid reason before Nananom for questioning in line with tradition and the law.
He noted that communal labour contributes significantly to maintaining order, sanitation, and unity in the traditional area, adding that chiefs must lead these efforts with seriousness and consistency.
