The Government of Ghana has condemned the military takeover in Guinea-Bissau, describing it as an unconstitutional act that threatens democratic governance and disrupts the country’s electoral process.
In a press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Accra on Wednesday, the government said the coup d’état carried out by elements of the Guinean military represents “a direct assault on democratic governance” and undermines the peaceful presidential and legislative elections held on 23rd November 2025.
Ghana expressed “profound concern” and “deep dissatisfaction” over what it called a brazen attempt to overturn the will of the people of Guinea-Bissau.
According to the statement, the military action has dangerously interrupted the nation’s democratic trajectory and obstructed the anticipated announcement of election results scheduled for 27th November 2025.
Call for Restoration of Constitutional Order
The Government of Ghana urged all stakeholders in Guinea-Bissau to ensure the immediate restoration of constitutional rule and to resolve any electoral grievances through “peaceful, transparent, and legally recognised mechanisms.”
The statement emphasized that democratic processes must be respected and protected.
Ghana also demanded that the security and fundamental rights of all citizens and foreign nationals in Guinea-Bissau be safeguarded. Particular concern was expressed for officials from the ECOWAS Election Observation Mission currently stationed in the country.
Their “safety and secure passage must be guaranteed without delay,” the statement stressed.
The government appealed to the people of Guinea-Bissau to remain calm, exercise restraint, and avoid actions that may escalate tensions.
It reaffirmed Ghana’s support for ECOWAS and the African Union in their coordinated efforts to address the crisis in line with regional and continental protocols on democracy, good governance, and constitutional rule.
