The Ministry of the Interior has launched a full-scale investigation into allegations that Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng survived two assassination attempts while performing his official duties.
The Ministry announced the decision in a statement on Saturday, following public claims made by officials of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).
The allegations were first made public by the OSP’s Director of Strategy, Research and Communications, Samuel Appiah Darko, during an appearance on Joy FM’s Newsfile on December 6, 2025.
On the programme, he alleged not only that Mr. Agyebeng had been targeted for assassination, but also that he himself had been handcuffed and assaulted by 17 police officers.
Ministry Describes Allegations as Serious and Potentially Damaging
The Interior Ministry described the reports as “serious,” noting that any threat to officials of accountability institutions could undermine the government’s intensified anti-corruption drive.
“Such dangers to personnel of accountability institutions, if true, can undermine the government’s efforts to combat corruption,” the statement said, adding that the Ministry is treating the matter with urgency.
Preliminary Findings Released
According to the Ministry, initial engagements with the Special Prosecutor indicate that the alleged assassination attempts did not occur this year, contrary to public perception created by the televised account.
The Ministry also disclosed that no official report of threats on Mr. Agyebeng’s life exists in the records of the Ghana Police Service or any national security agency.
“There is no record or report of such threats against his life at any police station or state security agency in the country,” the Ministry noted.
Two-Pronged Investigation Ordered
Despite the lack of prior reports, the Interior Minister has directed two separate investigations:
A full probe into the alleged assassination attempts on the Special Prosecutor, with the Ministry noting that “crime does not expire.”
An investigation into claims by Mr. Samuel Appiah Darko that he was handcuffed and beaten by 17 police officers.
The Ministry assured the public that the findings will be made known once investigations conclude and appropriate actions are determined.
The statement emphasized the Ministry’s commitment to ensuring the safety of all citizens, including state officials, as they go about their lawful duties.
“The Ministry of Interior reiterates its commitment to protecting all lives and properties to ensure that all Ghanaians can conduct their lawful affairs without fear for their safety,” it concluded.
