Ashanti NPP group alleges Kennedy Agyapong demanded GH¢5m From Dr. Bawumia to support 2024 campaign

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is leading Kennedy Ohene Agyapong in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2026 presidential primaries, according to the latest nationwide poll conducted by Global InfoAnalytics.

The survey, led by pollster and strategist Mussa K. Dankwah, places Dr. Bawumia ahead with 45 per cent support among likely voters, compared with 31 per cent for Mr. Agyapong. Dr. Bryan Acheampong trails with 3 per cent, while 11 per cent of respondents declined to disclose their choice and 9 per cent remain undecided.

The poll was conducted between December 19 and 22, 2025, using Computer Assisted Telephone Interviews (CATI). A total of 3,521 respondents were sampled across all 16 regions, employing random probability sampling. The survey has a 99 per cent confidence level and a ±2.12 per cent margin of error.

Regional and Demographic Trends

Dr. Bawumia leads in most regions, posting particularly strong numbers in the Northern Region (95%), Upper East (72%), Upper West (58%) and Savannah Region (62%). Mr. Agyapong shows notable strength in Ashanti and Central regions, where his support rises above 40 per cent.

Demographically, Dr. Bawumia performs strongly across gender lines, polling 45 per cent among men and 46 per cent among women. He also dominates among voters aged 25–34, with 55 per cent support, and maintains consistent leads across educational levels, including tertiary graduates.

Among religious groups, Dr. Bawumia records 63 per cent support among Muslim respondents and 42 per cent among Christians, while Mr. Agyapong performs relatively better among younger voters aged 18–24.

Committed and Runoff Voter Models

Under the committed voters model, Dr. Bawumia’s lead widens to 56 per cent, compared with 39 per cent for Mr. Agyapong. In a simulated runoff scenario, Dr. Bawumia again leads with 47 per cent, against 32 per cent for Mr. Agyapong, with the remainder undecided or undisclosed.

Comparing trends between November and December 2025, Dr. Bawumia’s support increased by two percentage points, while Mr. Agyapong recorded a significant 13-point surge, narrowing the gap but still trailing.

Party Unity and “Second Chance” Debate

The poll also examined party unity and perceptions around re-presenting a candidate for the 2028 general election. An overwhelming 89 per cent of respondents believe the NPP will unite after the internal campaign.

On whether presenting a candidate for a second time would enhance the party’s chances in 2028, 50 per cent agreed in December, down from 59 per cent in November, while disagreement rose to 23 per cent.

Supporters of Dr. Bawumia were most likely to agree with the “second chance” argument, with 82 per cent endorsing the idea, compared with 19 per cent among Mr. Agyapong’s supporters.

Methodology Note

Global InfoAnalytics cautioned that due to rounding, some totals may not add up to exactly 100 per cent. The demographic breakdown shows respondents were 81 per cent male and 19 per cent female, with the largest age group being 35–44 years.

Mr. Dankwah described the findings as an early but important snapshot of the internal dynamics shaping the NPP’s race ahead of the December 24, 2026 presidential primaries, noting that voter preferences could still shift as campaigning intensifies.
