Ransford Amankwah Asomani, a level 200 Bachelor of Science (BSc) Agribusiness Management student at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), died after slipping and falling from a hostel while smoking weed, investigations by Kumasi Mail have confirmed.
The incident occurred on Sunday, February 8, 2026, at a hostel located outside the Ayeduase campus.
Fellow students rushed Ransford to the university hospital with assistance from the police patrol team, but he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The deceased’s family has confirmed to the University management that Ransford had struggled with a history of weed use.
A source within the university revealed that the student reportedly became dizzy while smoking on the second floor of the uncompleted hostel, causing him to slip and fall.
In a statement on Monday, February 9, 2026, KNUST’s University Relations Officer, Dr. Daniel Norris Bekoe, said the parents had been informed and investigations are ongoing.
“The KNUST police, in collaboration with the university security services, have commenced investigations into the incident.
Management will provide further updates to the media and the public as soon as all the facts are established,” he said.
This is the second reported case of a student falling from a hostel while under the influence of weed, highlighting ongoing concerns about student safety and drug use on campus.
