President John Dramani Mahama has welcomed the adoption of a United Nations resolution declaring the trafficking and racialised chattel enslavement of Africans as the gravest crime against humanity.
In a statement on X, the president of Ghana said he was “overjoyed” by the decision of the United Nations General Assembly, describing it as a historic step in recognising the suffering of millions of Africans who were captured and enslaved.
President Mahama said the resolution was made possible through the solidarity of people around the world and the efforts of a coalition led by the African Union, CARICOM and other international partners.
He noted that the decision to adopt the resolution on a day of remembrance made it a fitting way to honour the millions of Africans who were trafficked and enslaved over several centuries.
The president also referred to the legacy of François-Dominique Toussaint L’Ouverture, who was born into slavery and later became one of the key figures in Haiti’s struggle for independence. According to him, the resolution reinforces the importance of unity in the fight against historical injustice.
Mr. Mahama urged people across the world to remain united in the effort to restore the dignity and humanity of those who were enslaved, describing the UN decision as a major milestone in the global push for recognition and justice.
