The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak, has announced renewed government commitment to prison reforms following a high-level meeting with President John Dramani Mahama at the Jubilee House.
According to the minister, he led members of the Ghana Prisons Service Council to brief the President on the current state of the prison system, highlighting key challenges and the urgent need for transformation within the service.

President Mahama, in response, reaffirmed his strong support for reforms in the sector, emphasizing the need for a humane and rehabilitative approach to incarceration. “Prison is not a place to wish your enemy,” he stated, underscoring the importance of improving conditions for both inmates and officers.
The President also pledged full government backing for the “Think Prison, Think 360 Agenda,” a comprehensive reform framework aimed at overhauling the country’s prison system. The initiative focuses on enhancing inmate welfare, improving working conditions for prison officers, and promoting community involvement to support effective rehabilitation and reintegration.
The delegation included the Chairman of the Council, Alexander Nana Yaw Kumi-Larbi, and the Director-General of Prisons, Patience Baffoe-Bonnie.

The meeting forms part of broader efforts by the government to address longstanding issues within Ghana’s correctional system, including overcrowding, inadequate infrastructure, and limited rehabilitation resources.
Officials say the proposed reforms are expected to modernize the service and align it with international best practices.
