The Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr. Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye, has filed a defamation lawsuit against Yayra Koku, the Deputy Director of IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The lawsuit, initiated at the High Court in Accra, stems from a statement made by Yayra Koku on his “X” (formerly Twitter) social media page on August 14, 2024, which Abronye claims is defamatory.
In the controversial post, Yayra Koku allegedly wrote, “I assumed Abronye and Wontumi were the only reckless and ignorant members of the NPP, but I had no idea this one, who aspires to be an MP, is worse than Abronye and Wontumi combined…” The statement, according to the lawsuit, has severely tarnished Abronye’s reputation and subjected him to public ridicule.
Abronye, through his legal counsel, Nana Obiri Boahen, is seeking several reliefs from the court. These include a declaration that the statement is defamatory, general damages for defamation, and exemplary damages amounting to GHS 2 million.
Abronye is further requesting an order compelling Yayra Koku to issue a public apology in the Daily Graphic newspaper, on Ghanaweb, and on his “X” social media page.
The lawsuit outlines Abronye’s extensive political and academic background, emphasizing his contributions as Bono Regional Chairman of the NPP and his recent appointment as a board member of the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR).
The statement claims that the defamatory post has caused significant harm to Abronye’s reputation, leading to questions about his competency and integrity among his peers and the general public.
The court is expected to hear the case in the coming weeks, with Yayra Koku being commanded to enter an appearance within eight days of being served the writ. If he fails to do so, a judgment may be issued in his absence.
This lawsuit highlights the ongoing tensions between key figures in Ghana’s two major political parties, the NPP and the NDC, as the country approaches the next general election.
