Member of Parliament for Abetifi, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, has appealed to members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to unite behind the party’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, as the party prepares for the 2028 general election.
Dr. Acheampong, a former Minister of Food and Agriculture, made the call in a statement addressing recent tensions within the party, particularly following remarks by fellow NPP stalwart Hon. Kennedy Agyapong after the party’s presidential primary.
He said having contested the January primary himself, he understood the disappointment that comes with losing a competitive race, adding that such experiences should not become a source of division within the party.
“The single most important task before us between now and 2028 is to rebuild, to reunite, and to return to power,” Dr. Acheampong stated, stressing that internal disagreements must not distract the party from its broader political goals.
He acknowledged the concerns raised by Mr. Agyapong, describing him as a committed member of the NPP whose contributions and influence among party supporters cannot be ignored. However, he urged him to support efforts aimed at reconciliation rather than division.
Dr. Acheampong also admitted that some comments made during and after the party’s internal contest, including remarks from individuals associated with different campaigns, were inappropriate and contributed to tensions.
He, however, argued that there was no evidence that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia authorised or supported such attacks, saying the actions of individuals should not be attributed to the flagbearer or the entire party.
“Dr. Bawumia is now the candidate of all of us. He carries the mandate not only of those who voted for him, but of every member who voted for Ken, for me, and for the others who contested,” he said.
The Abetifi MP called on supporters of all contenders in the party’s primary to put aside personal disagreements and focus on strengthening the NPP ahead of the 2028 elections.
“Unity is not weakness. Unity is how we win,” Dr. Acheampong concluded
