Benito Owusu Bio, former deputy minister for land and Natural resources and Member of Parliament for the Atwima Nwabiagya North constituency, faced strong backlash from residents of Asuofua due to what they perceive as a lack of development in the area.
During a constituency tour with Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the 2024 running mate of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, flag bearer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Benito Owusu Bio, who also serves as the Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources in charge of forestry, was met with hostility.
The event, which took place at the Asuofua lorry terminal yesterday, saw residents and party supporters gathered to welcome Dr. Opoku Prempeh.
Residents expressed their dissatisfaction with the MP’s performance since he assumed office in 2000, particularly criticizing the poor state of roads, water supply, health facilities, and educational infrastructure.
“We are not happy about the state of the roads, water, health facilities, educational facilities, and more. If we see anyone in authority, especially our non-performing MP, we have to react,” some residents stated.
The tension reached its peak when Benito Owusu Bio was introduced to address the gathering. Residents, angered by the underdevelopment in the area, staged a protest and began hurling insults at the MP, accusing him of blocking progress in the constituency.
The situation worsened when the MP claimed in his speech that his tenure had brought development to Atwima Nwabiagya North. The crowd responded with increased insults and jeers, forcing a DJ to intervene by playing loud music to drown out the commotion.
Feeling embarrassed, Benito Owusu Bio cut his speech short and left the stage to avoid further insults and personal attacks.
