The Volta regional secretary of the NDC, James Gunu is demanding answers from the Electoral Commission over some irregularities detected in the provisional Voters’ register.
Mr Gunu during a routine tour on the last day of the Voter exhibition exercise which ended on Tuesday, told the media that several names of persons who registered and voted in the 2020 elections have been removed from the register.
This he said was only detected when the individuals including his own deputy, Bright Kwashie Egeh, went to the exhibition to check their details.
“These are not people who have just registered; they are people who registered and voted in the 2020 general elections, their names are not in the register and this has affected even my deputy, the Deputy Regional Secretary, Bright Kwashie Egeh. whose polling station number is DO33301 with voter ID number 9045005304.”
“He is one person who voted in the 2020 general elections. How come his name is not in the current register? At what point has his name been deleted?.”
In 2020, the NDC in the Volta region accused the EC of deliberately removing or placing registered voters at polling stations they never registered -a move the party claim disenfranchised a good number of voters in Ketu South, Ketu North, Keta and the Anlo constituencies.
But according to Mr Gunu, these discrepancies are still being repeated as detected on the provisional register.
“In some other cases, some individuals have their names placed at polling stations they are not familiar with and never registered to vote there. So they go to the exhibition center to check their details and cannot find it so they now go from one center to the other trying to find their names and center. If we don’t correct these issues before election day, voters won’t have the luxury to be roaming about searching for their voting centers.”
To have a credible register to be accepted by all the political parties ahead of the December polls, Mr Gunu called on the EC to address the aforementioned concerns and several discrepancies.
“There is also an incident, where a gentleman by name, Ahiadorme Johnson Worlanyo, D120417 that’s the polling station code with voter ID number 1515000378.
If you go to the EC’s system using the short code they publicized, this ID number which is supposed to belong to this gentleman has been given to somebody, by name, Agnes Owusu, aged 65 and a female at Effiduase/Asokore in the Ashanti region.”
He called on the EC to ensure these discrepancies are corrected and the final register be made available to the political parties in time to enable the parties peruse it before the elections.
He warned that the NDC will not allow the EC to mess up with the 2024 polls using any fraudulent or technical errors.
