Former Vice President and 2028 New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has been honoured by the leadership of St. Jude’s Catholic Church at New Weija in the Greater Accra Region for his contribution towards the construction and development of the church.
Dr. Bawumia, who visited the church on Sunday, August 30, 2026, was presented with a citation in recognition of his financial support for the construction of the church, which he said was provided in fulfilment of a promise to the parish priest, Rev. Fr. Andrew Campbell.
The visit also saw Dr. Bawumia donate GH¢50,000 towards the running of the church and commission a newly constructed eight-seater washroom facility equipped with disability-friendly features.
The former Vice President said he was deeply moved by the transformation of the church building he had helped to construct.
“Earlier today, I had the honour of visiting St. Jude’s Catholic Church at New Weija, a church I was privileged, by God’s grace, to help build in fulfilment of a promise to my good friend and resident priest, Father Andrew Campbell,” he said.
“Seeing the beautiful edifice today was deeply moving. To God be the glory.”
Dr. Bawumia’s relationship with the church dates back several years. In 2024, he visited St Jude’s Catholic Church following an invitation from Fr. Campbell and pledged to support the completion of the church building.
According to reports from that visit, Fr. Campbell had appealed for support for a number of community needs, including the completion of an abandoned school block and improvements to the road serving the community.
Dr. Bawumia subsequently supported the church’s construction and other initiatives associated with Fr Campbell’s work among vulnerable people.
At Sunday’s ceremony, Fr. Campbell praised Dr. Bawumia for his generosity and concern for the poor, sick and vulnerable, describing his support as an expression of his love for humanity.
Dr. Bawumia also visited the nearby Weija Leprosarium, where he interacted with residents and reaffirmed his commitment to supporting vulnerable members of society.
His latest intervention adds to a relationship with the church and leprosarium that has extended beyond the construction of the church, with previous support also directed at individuals and community initiatives.
The church leadership’s decision to honour him therefore reflects not only his contribution to the physical structure of St Jude’s but also his wider support for the work being undertaken by Fr. Campbell among disadvantaged people in the New Weija community.
The ceremony was attended by church leaders, parishioners and other guests.
