With more than three decades in Ghana’s public service and years of involvement in the NPP from the constituency to the national level, Alois K.K. Mohl is presenting his professional and political experience as his strongest qualification for the Nandom parliamentary seat.

Mr Mohl formally declared his intention on Thursday to contest the NPP parliamentary primaries in Nandom, joining the emerging four-way contest for the party’s parliamentary candidacy.

His political profile describes him as a public administrator, social development practitioner, training and development expert and monitoring and evaluation specialist who rose through Ghana’s public service to the rank of Director.

He worked on several national programmes and specialised desks, largely in the child protection sector, including as National Coordinator of Ghana’s Care Reforms Initiative.

He also served as Head of International Social Services, where his responsibilities included working with national governments and international organisations on cross-border child trafficking and the repatriation of victims and other vulnerable citizens.

He headed the desk responsible for non-profit organisations and another responsible for early childhood development centres, with responsibilities including registration, licensing, monitoring and capacity building.

His profile also lists work as a resident consultant on a Ghana-Italy project focused on institutional capacity building and livelihood skills for street children.

Mr Mohl’s last major public-sector position was Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Social Investment Fund, following his appointment by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

He claims that during his time at SIF he helped secure a six-unit classroom block with a computer laboratory at Dondometeng and a modern multipurpose electrical workshop for the Nandom Technical Institute.

He further claims that 15 additional education and health infrastructure projects had been secured for Nandom under a development-partner arrangement before his appointment was terminated.

His academic credentials include an MBA in Human Resource Management from Central University, an MSc in Defence and International Politics from the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College, an LLB from Mountcrest University College and a BA in Political Science with Sociology from the University of Ghana.

He also holds a Certificate in Social Work from the School of Social Work, Osu, and has undertaken specialised training in child protection, non-profit management, international adoptions, child labour reporting and care reforms in Israel, the United Kingdom, the United States, Italy, Ethiopia and South Africa.

But Mr Mohl’s political résumé is almost as extensive as his professional one.

His profile lists NPP positions and assignments ranging from constituency and regional structures to national committees, including membership of the National Council and National Executive Committee, Vice Chairman of the then Lawra/Nandom Constituency, Member Secretary of the 2007 Presidential Primaries Committee, Member Secretary of the National Disciplinary Committee and Chairman of the Upper West Regional Disciplinary Committee.

He also served on national and regional campaign teams, election monitoring teams, the post-2008 elections review team and the National ICT Committee that introduced the party’s first plastic membership cards.

The profile further identifies him as campaign coordinator for Ambrose Dery from 2005 to the latter part of 2008.

Mr Mohl is also presenting his relationships within the party as a key advantage, claiming that his years of national-level involvement have given him direct access to senior NPP figures, including the party’s flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

He said those connections, coupled with his professional experience in lobbying and negotiation, would enable him to attract opportunities and development projects to Nandom if elected.

His record of support to the party and constituents also features prominently in his campaign.

His profile claims that he has supported constituents with school fees, medical bills, farming inputs, livelihoods and employment opportunities, while contributing financially to the development of the NPP’s Upper West Regional office.

Mr Mohl is now seeking to convert that long record into a parliamentary mandate, arguing that Nandom needs an experienced hand rather than an experiment.

He has promised to use his professional expertise, political networks and experience in public administration to push the constituency’s interests at the national level.

For Mr Mohl, the argument is straightforward: his years in public service, academic training and long involvement in NPP affairs have prepared him for Parliament.

The Nandom primary, however, will ultimately be decided by NPP delegates when the party opens nominations for the contest.
