The Controller and Accountant-General’s Department (CAGD) has paid promotion-related salary adjustments and arrears to 56,003 teachers of the Ghana Education Service (GES), ahead of the October 16, 2026 deadline agreed between the government and teacher unions.
According to a press release issued by the department, 49,725 teachers received their payments on October 15, 2026, together with their October salaries, covering salary adjustments and arrears dating back to January 1, 2026.
A further 6,278 teachers were paid in September 2026, bringing the total number of teachers who have received their promotion-related payments to 56,003.
The payments follow an agreement reached between government representatives and teacher unions at a meeting held at the Ministry of Education on October 2, 2026, which set October 16 as the deadline for settling the outstanding arrears.
630 cases awaiting resolution
The department disclosed that out of approximately 80,000 teachers reported to have been promoted, GES had processed and submitted supporting documents for 56,633 teachers.
Following verification, CAGD approved and paid 56,003 cases, while 630 remain pending due to issues identified during the verification process.
The department said it was awaiting GES to resolve the outstanding issues before the affected teachers could receive their payments.
Meanwhile, 23,367 teachers are yet to have their cases processed and the necessary documentation submitted by GES.
CAGD assures prompt payment
CAGD said it had completed payments for all teachers whose submitted records met the required payroll requirements.
The department assured that it remained committed to processing outstanding eligible payments promptly once the necessary corrections had been made or complete and accurate documentation had been received and verified.
It also expressed appreciation to GES, teacher unions, and the ministries and agencies involved for their cooperation in facilitating the payments.
The statement was issued by Cephas N. Dosoo, Head of Public Relations, on behalf of the Controller and Accountant-General.
