The Electoral Commission (EC) has assured Ghanaians that the current voter’s register is still being updated and should not be regarded as final, as efforts to improve its accuracy are ongoing.

This comes in response to growing concerns from political parties, civil society organizations, and the public about potential discrepancies in the voter roll ahead of the 2024 general elections.

Speaking at an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting on Tuesday, October 1, EC Chairperson Jean Mensa clarified that the register is provisional, with corrections expected during the exhibition phase, where the public is encouraged to raise claims and objections.

Addressing demands from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for a forensic audit of the voter’s register, citing alleged discrepancies, Madam Mensa acknowledged their concerns but described the request as premature.

She emphasized that the EC is open to scrutiny and will work with stakeholders to enhance the register’s credibility, but reiterated the Commission’s commitment to maintaining its independence and integrity throughout the process.

“The NDC raised five categories of concerns about the register, and we requested further evidence from them. However, we assured them that such issues are common in every voter’s register and are exactly what the exhibition exercise aims to uncover and address. Unfortunately, the NDC has yet to present additional evidence to the EC,” she explained.

Madam Mensa highlighted that the IPAC meeting was organized to provide all parties with the opportunity to submit any evidence of discrepancies in the voter roll. “It is important to note that the current register is not perfect and not final,” she stated, reaffirming the EC’s commitment to delivering a transparent and fair election.

She encouraged political parties and the public to remain engaged and cooperative as preparations for the 2024 elections continue, assuring that all necessary measures will be taken to ensure the voter’s register is finalized with accuracy and fairness.
