The EIB Network has strongly condemned the violent attack on its Legal Affairs Correspondent, Murtala Inusah, by supporters of Bishop Elisha Salifu Amoako at the Accra High Court.
The assault occurred on Tuesday during Murtala’s coverage of the ongoing trial involving the embattled prophet and his wife, Mouha Amoako.
The case revolves around their 16-year-old child, who is alleged to have caused a fatal car accident on October 12, 2024.
Murtala Inusah, an award-winning court reporter, was performing his journalistic duties when he was physically attacked by supporters of Bishop Amoako, who were protesting the prophet’s arrest.
During the incident, Murtala sustained multiple cuts on his wrist, and his mobile phone was forcefully seized by the attackers.
The EIB Network has described the attack as unprovoked and unacceptable, calling it a direct violation of press freedom. “This attack is not only an assault on our colleague but also an affront to the rights of journalists to report freely and without intimidation,” the Network stated.
Murtala Inusah was filming the court proceedings when he was confronted by members of the group affiliated with Alive Chapel International. The supporters were reportedly agitated over the ongoing trial and expressed their displeasure by targeting the journalist.
EIB Network has called on the Ghana Police Service to launch an immediate investigation and ensure that those responsible for the attack are brought to justice. “Attacks on journalists cannot be tolerated under any circumstances. The safety and security of media professionals must be upheld to ensure they can continue their essential work of reporting in the public interest,” the statement added.
The Network urged the public and all parties involved in the case to respect the rule of law and the rights of the press. EIB also appealed to media organizations and civil society groups to stand in solidarity with Murtala Inusah and condemn the violent actions against him.
Despite the attack, EIB Network reaffirmed its commitment to providing accurate and impartial news coverage and vowed not to be deterred by acts of intimidation. The Network emphasized the vital role that journalism plays in promoting transparency and accountability in public matters, especially in cases of national importance such as this.
The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) and other media advocacy groups are expected to respond to the incident and provide further support to Murtala Inusah as investigations proceed.
