The 2028 presidential flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has called for unity within the party, urging members to place the collective ambition of the party above individual interests as preparations begin for the 2028 general elections.
Addressing the Minority Caucus in Parliament at a meeting on Wednesday, Dr. Bawumia stressed that the party’s main objective was to secure victory in both the presidential and parliamentary elections.
“We all have interests and ambitions, but none of us should allow his or her personal interests to override the collective ambition of our party,” he said. “Our collective ambition is to promote the nation, promote our party, promote my candidacy, and promote our parliamentary candidates so that we can win the presidential and parliamentary elections of 2028.”
The former Vice President assured Members of Parliament that his support for them would go beyond ceremonial appearances, pledging to remain accessible for engagement, policy discussions, and strategic communication throughout the campaign period.
“You should never feel that you are carrying this parliamentary responsibility alone,” he told the caucus.
Dr. Bawumia also dismissed claims of divisions within the party following the presidential primaries, insisting that the NPP remained united despite differing political alignments during the internal contest.
“We have finished the presidential primary, and therefore I don’t see any faction amongst us. I only see the NPP,” he stated. “We are all one together.”
He further pledged not to support the removal of any Member of Parliament based on political differences during the primaries.
“I would not be in any situation where I’m going to push for the removal of any MP because they didn’t support me. I’ll never do that,” he said, adding that no one should undertake such actions in his name.
On policy direction, Dr. Bawumia revealed that the party had established policy committees that would eventually transition into a manifesto committee to shape the NPP’s agenda for the 2028 elections.
According to him, the committees are expected to complete their work by the end of the year to allow the party to begin communicating its policy alternatives to Ghanaians ahead of 2027.
“We don’t want to wait until 2028 before starting to sell our messages to the Ghanaian public. It will be a bit late by then,” he noted.
He added that the party was also forming engagement teams to interact with identifiable groups such as teachers, nurses, and miners to better understand their concerns and incorporate them into the party’s manifesto.
Dr. Bawumia expressed confidence that the NPP would present a strong platform and clear messaging capable of distinguishing the party from the opposition National Democratic Congress on governance issues.
He also used the occasion to condemn what he described as the harassment and intimidation of NPP activists and communicators over their views on national matters.
“Democracy was not built on fear,” he said while reiterating concerns about recent arrests and tensions involving party supporters.
