Former Vice President and 2024 presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party, Mahamudu Bawumia, has urged the party’s Minority caucus in Parliament to transition from internal healing to preparing to reclaim power in the 2029 general elections.
Addressing members of the NPP Minority during an engagement in Parliament, Dr. Bawumia described the meeting as a critical moment in the party’s political journey, noting that it was the first full parliamentary gathering since the party concluded its presidential primary.
According to him, Ghanaians are closely observing the conduct and direction of the opposition party to determine whether it is ready to govern again.
“The country is watching to see what kind of opposition we have become,” he said. “Ghanaians are watching to see whether we are becoming a government in waiting or whether we are yet to settle.”
Dr. Bawumia said the meeting also comes at a time when what he described as the honeymoon period of the ruling National Democratic Congress administration is gradually fading, with citizens beginning to question the government’s performance.
He accused the NDC government of over-promising and under-delivering, arguing that public dissatisfaction is beginning to create space for stronger opposition voices.
“This means that Ghanaians are waking up to the reality of the lackluster performance of the NDC,” he stated.
The former Vice President commended the Minority caucus for what he described as their resilience and commitment over the past 17 months, praising them as the “last line of defense” for both the party and the country.
“You have stood and defended our nation and party to everyone’s admiration, earning you the accolade ‘the mighty minority,’” he said.
Dr. Bawumia, however, urged the caucus not to become complacent, stressing that their responsibility extends beyond the number of seats they occupy in Parliament.
“In opposition, the Minority caucus is not a spectator,” he noted. “It is the first line of accountability, the first line of policy scrutiny, and the first line of reassurance to citizens.”
He further called on the MPs to project competence, unity, and readiness for governance as the party repositions itself for the future.
“We are no longer healing; we are preparing to govern,” Dr. Bawumia declared. “We must now position ourselves credibly as a party preparing to govern from January 7, 2029.”
He added that from the new parliamentary session onward, every contribution made by NPP lawmakers must address the concerns of ordinary Ghanaians and reinforce the party’s vision for national leadership.
