Government has intensified peace efforts in Gbiniyiri in the Savannah Region following renewed clashes that have claimed lives, destroyed property, and forced thousands of residents to flee their homes, some crossing into neighbouring Côte d’Ivoire.
On Saturday, the Minister for Interior, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, led a high-level delegation to the palace of the Overlord of the Gonjaland Kingdom, Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale I, in line with a directive from President John Dramani Mahama after receiving a security briefing.
The closed-door discussions focused on strategies to end the violence in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba and Bole districts and to restore calm in the enclave.
Addressing the media after the meeting, the Interior Minister underscored the government’s determination to work with traditional authorities and local stakeholders to secure lasting peace.
“We want to appeal to all factions to understand that nothing can compare to peace. Once we agree to sit down and start talking, these tensions will be a thing of the past,” he said.
The Minister also disclosed that additional security reinforcements had been deployed to the area, including joint patrols by the police, military, and immigration officers, particularly along the northern borders with Burkina Faso and Côte d’Ivoire.
Authorities are hopeful that the combined efforts of traditional leaders, security agencies, and government will create a pathway toward sustainable peace in Gbiniyiri and its surrounding communities.
