The Bono Regional Secretariat of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has expressed strong concern over the arrest and detention of its Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe Abronye, describing the move as unlawful and politically motivated.
In a statement signed by Regional Secretary Kofi Ofosu Boateng, the party said Mr. Abronye, widely known as Chairman Abronye, honored a police invitation on Monday, September 8, 2025, around 10 a.m. in the company of his legal counsel.
However, he was subsequently placed under arrest and taken to an undisclosed location, with his lawyers and close associates allegedly denied access to him.
The NPP Secretariat criticized the Ghana Police Service for failing to provide official reasons for his arrest, insisting that the development contradicts principles of transparency and accountability.
“It is standard legal and procedural practice that any suspect is questioned in the presence of their lawyers, and anything short of this amounts to a blatant disregard for due process and a violation of fundamental human rights,” the statement read.
The Bono Regional Secretariat has called on the Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, to ensure strict adherence to due process in handling the case, Issue an official statement clarifying the grounds for Mr. Abronye’s arrest and detention and guard against what the party described as “sinister or politically motivated machinations.”
The party warned that any attempts to target its Regional Chairman for political reasons would not be tolerated.
“Such actions will not only be resisted by the party but will also be viewed as an affront to the democratic tenets of justice, fairness, and rule of law,” the statement cautioned.
Despite its condemnation, the Bono Regional NPP Secretariat urged party members and supporters to remain calm while it pursues “all legitimate means” to protect the rights of Chairman Abronye and ensure justice is served.
