Trading activities in major markets across Accra came to a standstill today as thousands of traders and commuters thronged to catch a glimpse of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) running mate, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, during her tour of several markets in the capital.
Chanting slogans for change and “maameo dendey,” the traders enthusiastically waved their cover cloths, with some rolling their hands and dancing to NDC’s campaign music. Their excitement was palpable as they expressed hope for the party’s return to power.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang visited key markets, including the Mallam Atta, Kaneshie, and Makola Markets, where she engaged with the leadership of the traders and commercial drivers’ unions.
At the Mallam Atta Market, hundreds of traders abandoned their wares to warmly welcome Prof. Opoku-Agyemang. She reassured them of a better economic environment and improved livelihoods under an NDC-led government. The traders, who lamented the economic difficulties and high costs of doing business, expressed a strong desire for relief.
In her address, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang highlighted the NDC’s commitment to implementing policies that would benefit ordinary Ghanaians. She particularly emphasized the proposed establishment of a Women’s Development Bank, aimed at providing loans with flexible payment terms to female traders. She described this initiative as a transformative measure to empower women financially and enhance the well-being of households.
“This visionary initiative will address the financial challenges facing women whose trading businesses are collapsing,” she stated.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang also acknowledged the poor conditions in the markets and promised that the NDC has plans for rehabilitating markets across the country, with a particular focus on giving the Mallam Atta Market a facelift.
“As you all know, the NDC delivers on its promises when in government,” she said, citing previous market infrastructure projects as evidence of the party’s track record.
To conclude her tour, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang urged the traders to vote massively for the NDC flagbearer, John Mahama, and the party’s parliamentary candidates in the upcoming December general elections, asserting that this would enable the NDC to “reset the country and build the Ghana we want together.”
