The 2028 presidential flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has urged Members of Parliament on the Minority side to adopt a more strategic and issue-based approach in holding the government accountable.
Addressing the NPP caucus, Dr. Bawumia stressed that the party’s role in opposition must go beyond rhetoric and focus on policies that directly impact the lives of Ghanaians.
“We’re not interested in statistical stability in itself unless it is translated into improvement in the lives of the people,” he stated.
Dr. Bawumia charged the Minority to demand the implementation of the government’s proposed 1-3-3 formula under the 24-hour economy policy and insist on evidence-based governance.
“When government makes a claim, ask for the numbers. The people are not interested in slogans anymore,” he said.
The former Vice President also cautioned against what he described as excessive confrontational politics in Parliament, urging the caucus to reserve walkouts and boycotts for only the most serious matters.
“An opposition that opposes everything is heard by nobody,” he remarked, adding, “Let’s be strategic in choosing our battles.”
According to him, the NPP under his leadership would become more responsive to the concerns of the Ghanaian people while positioning itself as a credible alternative government.
“I want this caucus to be known as a serious and prepared opposition,” he told the MPs.
Dr. Bawumia further called for unity within the party following the conclusion of the party’s presidential primaries.
“We have finished the presidential primaries and thus I don’t see any faction in the NPP,” he said.
He also rejected any attempts to victimise party members based on their positions during the internal contest.
“I’ll never push for the removal of an MP because he didn’t support me and nobody should do that in my name,” he stressed.
Touching on Ghana’s democratic values, Dr. Bawumia declared that “Ghana’s democracy was not built on fear,” while urging party members to remain steadfast and committed to democratic principles.
He further accused the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) of attempting to appropriate the achievements of the previous administration.
“The NDC will try to steal even our records,” he claimed.
