Mohl traces NPP roots in Nandom to grassroots mobilisation

Mohl traces NPP roots in Nandom to grassroots mobilisation

NPP parliamentary aspirant for Nandom, Hon. Alois K.K. Mohl, has sought to position his long political history and grassroots mobilisation efforts as a major part of the party’s growth in the constituency, particularly in the period leading to its breakthrough in the 2008 elections.

Mr Mohl, who has declared his intention to contest the NPP parliamentary primaries when nominations open in 2027, said his involvement in the party dates back decades and has included both constituency and national-level responsibilities.

Speaking during his declaration in Nandom on Thursday, September 3, 2026, he recalled that the NPP was formed in Nandom in 1992 by personalities including his father, KBR Valentine, and his uncle, Gbeck, at a time when the constituency was largely dominated by the NDC.

He said the party survived what he described as a hostile political environment during the Rawlings era before gaining momentum in the early 2000s under the leadership of then parliamentary candidate Ambrose Dery.

According to Mr Mohl, he subsequently took on an active grassroots mobilisation role, moving from home to home, workplace to workplace, chop bars, farms and communities in search of support for the NPP.

He claimed his efforts resulted in the conversion of a number of prominent NDC supporters to the NPP, including the late Franzag and former Nandom Constituency Chairman Seo.

Mr Mohl also cited his relationship with the late Rasta and his intervention in chieftaincy-related tensions as part of his contribution to building bridges within the constituency.

He recalled that during the 2006 Kakube Festival, all factions participated in the event for the first time since 1986, describing it as an indication of his ability to engage opposing sides and promote reconciliation.

He further claimed that his grassroots work helped lay the foundation for the NPP’s performance in 2008, when, according to him, the party began recording double-digit votes in most communities in Nandom.

Mr Mohl said his political activities have not been confined to Nandom. His political profile lists him as having served in several NPP structures, including the National Council and National Executive Committee, as well as the party’s national and regional campaign teams.

He has also served as Vice Chairman for Lawra/Nandom, Member Secretary of the 2007 Presidential Primaries Committee, Member Secretary of the National Disciplinary Committee, Chairman of the Upper West Regional Disciplinary Committee and Chairman of Monitoring and Evaluation for the Northern Sector.

His profile also identifies him as Member Secretary of the National Settler Communities Campaign and a member of the national campaign team responsible for Local Government and Decentralisation Policy.

Mr Mohl said he served as Campaign Coordinator for Hon. Ambrose Dery from 2005 to the latter part of 2008 and participated in several party activities, including election monitoring, post-election reviews and the introduction of the NPP’s first plastic membership cards through the National ICT Committee.

His political career has, however, also been marked by periods of controversy. He was disqualified from the NPP’s 2023/24 parliamentary primary in Nandom after constituency executives accused him of campaigning against the party’s parliamentary candidates in previous elections.

Mr Mohl has consistently denied the allegations. In his latest declaration, he described the accusations as part of what he called an “evil strategy” to dim his political influence, insisting that those who accused him never produced evidence of him campaigning against the party.

He said the allegations were never properly subjected to the party’s disciplinary process and also claimed that the same accusations contributed to the termination of his appointment at the Social Investment Fund.

His membership was subsequently reinstated by the Upper West Regional Executive Committee in 2025 after consideration of his petition and conduct, according to reports.

Mr Mohl’s political activism has run alongside a professional career spanning more than 30 years in public administration and social development.

He holds an MBA in Human Resource Management from Central University, an MSc in Defence and International Politics from the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College, an LLB from Mountcrest University College and a BA in Political Science with Sociology from the University of Ghana. He also holds a Certificate in Social Work from the School of Social Work, Osu.

His professional background includes work in child protection, social development, training, monitoring and evaluation and public administration. He rose through the public service to become a Director before entering frontline politics and later served as Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Social Investment Fund under the Akufo-Addo administration.

Mr Mohl argues that his combination of political experience, professional training and longstanding grassroots engagement makes him better placed to rebuild the NPP in Nandom and lead its return to power in the constituency.

He has therefore made party unity, reconciliation and reconnecting with grassroots supporters central to his campaign, insisting that the NPP’s defeat in 2024 should serve as a lesson for the party to strengthen its internal structures and reconnect with its base.

“I spent time converting NDC supporters and helping the NPP to win in 2008,” Mr Mohl said in his declaration, maintaining that his contribution to the party predates the current parliamentary contest.

He is now seeking the support of NPP delegates to return to the political frontline, promising to use his experience and networks to rebuild the party and reclaim the Nandom parliamentary seat.
