The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Ashanti Regional chapter, has launched the 2025 Ashanti Media Excellence Awards with a renewed call for journalists to protect the credibility of the profession in an increasingly AI-driven media environment.

The awards, launched in Kumasi, are designed to recognise journalists who have distinguished themselves through impactful and professional reporting across various areas of public interest.

This year’s edition is being held under the theme, “Celebrating Excellence, Championing Credibility: Journalism in the Age of AI.”

Speaking at the launch, GJA Ashanti Regional Chairman, Kofi Adu Domfeh, said the rapid spread of artificial intelligence, deepfakes, misinformation and disinformation had placed journalism at a critical point.

He stressed that journalists could only maintain public confidence by making verification, accuracy, fairness and balance central to their work.

“Journalism is at a crossroads in this era of deepfakes, misinformation, disinformation and the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence. Our professionalism is what will make the difference,” he said.

Awards to recognise quality reporting

The awards will provide an opportunity to celebrate journalists whose work has made a meaningful contribution to society while encouraging higher standards of reporting within the region.

The categories include Sports, Health, Education, Agriculture, Arts and Tourism, Documentary, Features, Science, and Environment and Climate Change.

Chairman of the Awards Committee, Isaac Justice Bediako of EIB Network’s GHOne TV, briefed journalists and other stakeholders on the categories and the revised nomination process.

He said entries would be subjected to strict scrutiny by the vetting committee, with an experienced five-member jury responsible for evaluating and reviewing submissions.

The organisers have therefore opened nominations and urged journalists to familiarise themselves with the requirements before submitting their work.

GJA promises accountable leadership

Beyond the awards, Mr. Adu Domfeh reaffirmed the regional executives’ commitment to advancing the interests of journalists through transparency, accountability and collective responsibility.

He said the Ashanti Region had a strong media community capable of building a resilient and independent professional environment.

“As executives, we remain committed to delivering on our mandate through transparency, accountability and collective responsibility,” he said.

Chairperson for Female Media Practitioners, Eunice Attakorah Manu, also encouraged journalists across the region to participate actively in GJA programmes and activities to strengthen unity within the profession.

The 2025 Ashanti Media Excellence Awards ceremony is scheduled for the first week of October.

Nominations are currently open and will undergo evaluation, assessment and review ahead of the awards ceremony.
