President John Dramani Mahama has directed the formation of an inter-agency task force to develop a comprehensive roadmap to prevent the trafficking of narcotic drugs through Ghana’s borders.
The directive followed an urgent meeting chaired by the President with the country’s security chiefs to review recent cases involving the trafficking of drugs out of Ghana’s ports.
According to a media advisory issued on the outcome of the meeting, the President received a detailed briefing on ongoing investigations into the cases.
The briefing revealed that 10 individuals are currently being held in connection with the investigations, including four officers of the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).
The meeting also reviewed the existing structure and security systems at the country’s ports and borders and recommended additional measures to strengthen efforts to prevent narcotic trafficking.
President Mahama subsequently directed the newly constituted inter-agency task force to prepare and present a detailed roadmap based on the outcomes of the meeting.
The roadmap is expected to outline measures to strengthen the systems and security arrangements aimed at preventing the movement of narcotic drugs through Ghana’s borders.
The task force has been given two weeks to present its recommendations to the President.
Investigations into the recent trafficking cases are continuing.
