The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has attributed recent electricity supply challenges in parts of the Ashanti Region to equipment failures, cable faults and ongoing infrastructure upgrade works across the transmission and sub-transmission networks.

The explanation was given during a Regulatory and Reliability Performance Monitoring Meeting between the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) and ECG at the company’s Boadi office in Kumasi on Friday, October 16, 2026.

The meeting formed part of PURC’s regulatory monitoring activities aimed at assessing electricity reliability and service quality, identifying operational challenges and ensuring compliance with established service delivery standards to protect consumer interests.

Speaking on behalf of the General Manager of Ashanti Sub-Transmission, Ing. James Mensah Yevunya, Manager for Network Maintenance at ECG, said the recent disruptions resulted from two current transformer (CT) blasts on the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) network, as well as two cable faults at the Ridge Bulk Supply Point (BSP) and Boadi Primary Substation.

He added that ongoing infrastructure upgrade projects by both GRIDCo and ECG had further constrained operations and contributed to the challenges experienced during the period.

According to Ing. Yevunya, GRIDCo is upgrading its transformer capacity from 50/66MVA to 120/145MVA to improve power supply to the Ridge BSP. As part of the complementary works, ECG is installing new eight-way 33kV panels at Ridge to accommodate the increased capacity and enhance electricity distribution.

He assured the Commission that ECG was expediting work on its installations to ensure the company could receive and effectively utilise the upgraded capacity to improve electricity supply to consumers across the region.

On regulatory oversight and public communication, the Ashanti Regional Manager of PURC, Mr. Edward Boduah Kingston, urged ECG to keep the Commission regularly updated on ongoing infrastructure projects and operational developments.

He noted that timely information sharing would enable PURC to provide the public with accurate and up-to-date information on electricity supply conditions, helping consumers better understand the causes of disruptions and the measures being taken to address them.

Mr. Kingston also called for adequate resourcing of ECG’s Public Relations office to strengthen collaboration with the media and PURC. He stressed the importance of communicating technical operations and service challenges in clear, accessible language that consumers can readily understand.

The meeting brought together officials from both institutions, including Ing. Nicholas Frempong, Principal Manager of the Energy Services and Performance Monitoring (ESPM) Directorate of PURC; Ing. Enyonam Kumi, Principal Regulatory Engineer at the ESPM Directorate; and Cecil Oduro Nyarko, Regulatory Engineer at the same directorate.

Representing ECG were Ing. James Mensah Yevunya, Manager for Network Maintenance; Ing. Edem Evans Agra, Manager for Substation and Switchgear Maintenance; Ing. Andrews Appiah Sam, Acting Manager for Operations; Mrs. Cynthia Abrafi Mensah, Manager for Human Resources; and Collins Manu (APR), Head of Public Relations for Ashanti Sub-Transmission.

The engagement underscored the importance of continued coordination between ECG and PURC in addressing electricity supply challenges, improving network reliability and ensuring transparent communication with consumers across the Ashanti Region.
