Vice President-elect of the Republic, Professor Naana Jane Opoku Agyeman, says she will work towards ensuring that her historic rise to the nation’s second highest office inspires others to follow suit.
Speaking as part of a victory event at her running mate’s office, the academic said she took her role in Ghana’s history very seriously and will ensure her “interesting journey” remains meaningful.
“I will hold the door open. The method of opening the door, the method of holding the door open so others wish to travel that door, is what I’m implying. It is not a self-aggrandizing position. It is a position that empowers others,” she said of the vice presidency.
Professor Agyeman indicated that it was the National Democratic Congress that had worked the most towards inclusivity as she urged the audience to “come long” and, “work hard” in their various spaces.
Upon her election as vice-president, she is set to become the nation’s first female vice-president. Even before her party’s success in the presidential election, she had made history as the first woman to run on the ticket of a major political party.
She expressed gratitude to the Mahama Campaign, party faithful and Ghanaians for the confidence reposed in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) ticket.
The vice-president-elect is hardly a new face in government. During the erstwhile Mahama administration, she served as Minister of Education.
She is expected to play a key role in the incoming administration as policies including the establishment of a Women’s Development Bank.
