Tensions flared within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) over the weekend when National Organizer Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, clashed with Opare Ansah during the party’s “Thank You Tour.”
The disagreement arose after Opare Ansah heckled Nana B for allegedly ignoring signals to cut short Kennedy Ohene Agyapong’s speech. Agyapong, a presidential hopeful, had spoken extensively during the tour, a move that some within the camp of the NPP’s 2024 presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, reportedly viewed as detrimental.
They fear that allowing Agyapong more speaking time could bolster his grassroots support at the expense of Dr. Bawumia’s message, potentially undermining the campaign ahead of the party’s upcoming presidential primaries.
A member of the party’s national executive committee, speaking to Kumasi Mail, dismissed rumors circulating in the media that Opare Ansah slapped Nana B.
He clarified that while no physical altercation occurred, Nana B was indeed heckled.
“Opare Ansah only questioned Nana B on why he failed to stop Ken Agyapong from speaking for too long. The tone, however, was harsh,” the source explained.
In a viral video from the event, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong is seen warning Nana B. A member of the ‘Ken for President 2028’ campaign team later clarified the situation, stating, “Kennedy was warning Nana B not to attempt influencing his message during the Thank You Tour.”
The source further explained that Nana B allegedly approached Agyapong, asking him not to emphasize grassroots issues during his address to party members.
Provoked by the suggestion, Kennedy Agyapong reportedly warned Henry Nana Boakye against trying to censor him, particularly on matters concerning the grassroots.
Kennedy Agyapong has long argued that grassroots members have been unfairly treated and continually disrespected during the Thank You Tour activities.
