The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, is set to revive his mediation efforts in the Bawku conflict starting Monday, April 28, as part of broader initiatives to foster lasting peace in the region.
This renewed intervention follows a commitment by President John Mahama, who reaffirmed the government’s support for the Asantehene’s peace initiative as a key pillar of national reconciliation efforts.
In a statement issued on April 15, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II announced that a series of mediation sessions will take place from April 28 to May 1 at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi.
Ahead of the sessions, retired Security Analyst Colonel Festus Aboagye emphasized the need for stronger and broader support for the Asantehene’s efforts. In an opinion piece published Monday, Colonel Aboagye advocated for a multi-track diplomacy approach, calling for the active involvement of diaspora leaders, youth influencers, and women’s peacebuilding organizations.
“We must bolster Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s mediation by integrating diaspora leaders, young influencers, and women’s peace networks into the peace process,” Colonel Aboagye stated.
The Asantehene’s mediation is seen as a critical opportunity to build inclusive and sustainable peace in Bawku, a region that has faced recurrent ethnic tensions over the years.
