President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Anthony Kwasi Sarpong as the Acting Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).
This appointment, which took effect on January 21, 2025, follows the resignation of Julie Essiam, who stepped down from the position on the same day, underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring the smooth operation of the GRA during a critical period.
Anthony Kwasi Sarpong, a seasoned professional with a strong background in finance and management, is well-equipped to lead the GRA.
His extensive experience in audit, accounting advisory, corporate recovery, and insolvency will be invaluable in navigating the complexities of Ghana’s revenue landscape. Sarpong’s appointment reflects the government’s emphasis on leveraging expertise to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the GRA.
The appointment is made in accordance with Article 195(1) of the Constitution and Section 13(1) of the Ghana Revenue Act, 2009 (Act 791). This legal framework ensures that the selection process is transparent and aligned with constitutional requirements. The appointment is pending the formal advice of the GRA’s governing board, which will be provided in consultation with the Public Services Commission.
Sarpong has been formally congratulated on his appointment and has been requested to indicate his acceptance or otherwise within 14 days of receiving the official notification.

A communique from the Office of the President signed by Callistus Mahama Ph.D. Secretary to the President stressed that President Mahama has extended his best wishes to Sarpong, expressing confidence in his ability to lead the GRA effectively during this period.
