Ghana’s First Lady, Mrs Lordina Mahama, has been appointed Ambassador of the Merck Foundation in Ghana in recognition of her humanitarian work and contributions to healthcare and education through the Lordina Foundation.
The appointment was announced during the Merck Foundation Ghana Alumni Summit 2026 held at the Kempinski Hotel in Accra on Tuesday.
The honour was conferred jointly by Dr Rasha Kelej, Chief Executive Officer of the Merck Foundation, and Prof Dr Frank Stangenberg-Haverkamp, Chairman of the Foundation’s Board of Trustees.
Speaking at the event, Dr Kelej praised Mrs Mahama for initiatives that she said had improved the lives of thousands of people across Ghana, particularly vulnerable groups in deprived communities.
She said the Lordina Foundation, a long-standing partner of the Merck Foundation, had supported medical training scholarships for Ghanaian doctors, helping to expand access to specialised healthcare services across the country.
Dr Kelej also highlighted programmes focused on girls’ education and women’s empowerment, including the “More Than a Mother” campaign, the “Educating Linda” initiative and interventions aimed at tackling child marriage.
She further commended Mrs Mahama for supporting the annual Merck Foundation Media Recognition Awards, which encourage journalists across Africa and Asia to address issues such as infertility stigma, maternal health and social development.
Responding to the appointment, Mrs Mahama said her foundation had invested in developing future leaders by supporting scholarships for 40 Ghanaian medical professionals and training more than 110 beneficiaries in creative arts and information technology.
She said the testimonies shared by beneficiaries and alumni of the Merck Foundation had strengthened her commitment to continue supporting vulnerable communities.
“My heart is truly grateful as I listened to the testimonies of Merck Foundation Alumni. Their achievements offer hope that with dedication, no one can be left behind,” she said.
Mrs Mahama added that her foundation remained committed to healthcare support, educational opportunities and economic empowerment initiatives aimed at improving lives across the country.
She also reaffirmed the Lordina Foundation’s partnership with the Merck Foundation, describing it as an opportunity to continue promoting healthcare, education and leadership development in Ghana.
