The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has officially inaugurated the MahamaCares Task Force.

This initiative, spearheaded by President John Dramani Mahama, is designed to provide dedicated financial support to individuals battling chronic and debilitating illnesses, ensuring that no Ghanaian has to choose between their health and financial stability.

While the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) has been instrumental in improving medical coverage for Ghanaians, it often falls short in addressing the high costs associated with treating chronic diseases.

MahamaCares seeks to bridge this gap by offering targeted financial assistance, thereby ensuring fairness in healthcare access, particularly for those facing financial barriers to treatment.

The nine-member task force, chaired by the esteemed Rev. Prof. Emeritus Seth Aryeetey, has been tasked with several critical responsibilities.

These responsibilities include to develop a robust policy and legal framework to establish MahamaCares as a statutory entity, ensuring its long-term viability and effectiveness.

Other include Sustainable Funding Model, Eligibility and disbursement criteria and  healthcare Infrastructure evaluation.

The task force comprises a diverse group of experts, each bringing unique insights and expertise to the table.

The team is made up of Prof. Emeritus Binka  Former Vice Chancellor of the University of Health and Allied Sciences, renowned for his contributions to health education, Prof. Margaret Kweku Public Health Consultant with extensive experience in healthcare policy and planning, Dr. Alfred Doku: Consultant Cardiologist, specializing in heart diseases and their management.

Dr. Randolph Nsor-Ambala Financial expert with a deep understanding of sustainable funding models,

Dr. Anthony Gingong: Representative of the National Health Insurance Trust Fund, providing insights into existing healthcare financing systems, Dr. Anthony Seddoh Health Policy and Financing Expert, skilled in designing equitable healthcare systems, Anna Pearl Akiwumi-Siriboe Lawyer and Attorney General’s representative, ensuring legal compliance and oversight and Dr. Belinda Afriyie, Public Health Consultant and Secretary for the Taskforce, coordinating efforts and ensuring smooth operations.

Speaking at the event held at Ministry of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh underscored the limitations of Ghana’s National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) in fully addressing the financial strain of chronic disease treatments. While acknowledging the NHIS’s role in improving healthcare access, he emphasized that it does not eliminate the economic burden for patients with long-term illnesses.

He said “The Ghana Medical Trust Fund is a bold response to this challenge,” he declared. “Its purpose is clear: no Ghanaian should have to choose between their health and financial ruin.”

Again, the Health Minister extended an invitation to government agencies, private sector organizations, civil society groups, and the international community to join forces in mobilizing resources and advocating for sustainable healthcare financing.

This collaborative effort is crucial for ensuring that healthcare systems remain robust and accessible to all, particularly in supporting initiatives like MahamaCares that aim to alleviate the financial burdens associated with chronic diseases

Rev. Prof. Emeritus Seth Aryeetey expressed profound gratitude to President Mahama and Minister Akandoh for the opportunity to lead this initiative.

He assured that the task force is committed to working diligently to ensure the success of MahamaCares, delivering on its mandate effectively and making a tangible difference in the lives of Ghanaians.
