The National Association of Local Authorities of Ghana (NALAG) has commended President John Dramani Mahama for acknowledging the vital role of Assembly Members and allocating funds to facilitate the payment of their monthly allowances.
Speaking in a post-budget interview with www.Kumasimail.com, NALAG President Alfred Agyei lauded the GH¢100 million seed money designated for the initiative, describing it as a long-overdue recognition of the Assembly Members’ contributions.
“Since 1988, the work of Assembly Members has remained voluntary. Despite maintaining close contact with their electorates, attending District Assembly and subcommittee meetings, as well as participating in social events such as engagements, weddings, and funerals, they have never received any form of remuneration,” Mr. Agyei stated.
He urged the government to approve the 2025 budget to ensure the seamless implementation of the payment process. Additionally, he called for fairness and an equitable distribution of the allocated funds.
NALAG, the umbrella body representing all Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in Ghana, continues to advocate for the welfare of local authorities through lobbying, training, research, public education, and city-to-city collaborations.
