Renowned lawyer Thaddeus Sory has strongly denied claims made by NPP activist Alfred Ababio Kumi that he met with three Supreme Court Justices regarding the ongoing Article 146 proceedings. Sory described the allegation as “a monstrous lie.”
In a Facebook post, Sory stated, “No such meeting took place. It is very easy to fact check that. We know those who get justice through negotiation.”
The controversy began when Alfred Ababio Kumi petitioned President John Mahama to dissolve the five-member committee investigating petitions against the suspended Chief Justice (CJ).
His reason is that, last week, two members of the committee, together with counsel for one of the petitioners, were seen having dinner at a restaurant in Accra where they were overheard discussing matters in the petition over dinner.
According to the petitioner, that meeting and the discussions of the matter over dinner, undermine the integrity and credibility of the ongoing inquiry.
His argument is that, it will be good for the committee to be dissolved so that the process does not become a “sham” especially when he claims counsel for one of the petitioners, was overheard discussing the matter with two members of the committee at the restaurant.
For this reason, Ababio Kumi wants President Mahama to dissolve the committee.
“If we have matters of the removal of a Chief Justice, which is a constitutional matter, some of these things must be clearly looked at in order that the process does not become a “sham,” he claimed.
This petition is the latest attempt by the former ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) to interfere with the constitutional process following the establishment of a prima facie case against the suspended CJ.
The case led to the formation of a five-member committee tasked with investigating the allegations under Article 146 of the Constitution.
