The Combine Kumasi Central Market trader union is asking two former mayor of Kumasi, Osei Assibey Antwi and Samuel Pyne, to explain what happened to a $4 million compensation fund.
In a press statement released today, the union expressed deep concern over the alleged misappropriation of the funds.
“Traders are demanding explanations from former KMA Mayors, Osei Assibey Antwi and Samuel Pyne, regarding the $4 million compensation package that was promised to them following their eviction from the Kumasi Central Market,” the statement read.
According to the union, their investigations indicate that the compensation money has been disbursed; however, none of the affected traders have reportedly received any portion of the funds.
“Investigations suggest that the funds have been disbursed, yet traders have not received a pesewa. We suspect that the money may have been misappropriated and are calling for accountability”.
Beyond the compensation issue, the union also appealed to Kumasi city authorities to address the rampant exploitation by commercial drivers.
“We appeal to city authorities to regulate the conduct of commercial drivers who allegedly exploit passengers by charging exorbitant fares for short distances, particularly for trips heading towards the Racecourse Market”.
The Combine Kumasi Central Market Union also called on government and city officials to expedite the commencement of Phase Three of the Kejetia Redevelopment Project.
“We urge the government and city authorities to fast-track the start of Phase Three of the Kejetia Redevelopment Project and improve infrastructure at the Racecourse Market. This,we believe, would ensure a safer, cleaner, and more efficient trading environment in Kumasi”.
However, when Kumasimail.com call former Mayor Samuel Pyne declined to comment on the matter he said ” Can they provide any documentational prove of what they are claiming, which of their properties were destroyed ” he asked.
He added” when I took over the traders had already been relocated so what do they mean by I should account for $4 million compensation package” he asked again. Therefore, describing their allegation as baseless.
