The collapse of a building under construction at Avenor in North Kaneshie has renewed concerns about safety standards and compliance within Ghana’s construction sector, as emergency responders race to rescue people believed trapped beneath the debris.
The structure, located opposite the Ashfoam showroom and near Melcom Plus, collapsed on Sunday, June 7. Preliminary information indicates the building, believed to house both residential units and a mosque, was still under construction when the incident occurred.
The disaster has left at least one person in critical condition, while rescue teams continue searching for others feared trapped under the rubble.
According to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), firefighters from the Circle Fire Station and the National Headquarters were immediately dispatched to the scene following reports of the collapse.
Providing updates via the GNFS Facebook page, Assistant Divisional Officer Alex King Nartey disclosed that two individuals had been rescued and transported to hospital for treatment. One of the victims remains in a critical state.
Emergency responders suspect that one or two additional people may still be trapped beneath the collapsed structure, prompting an intensified search operation.
The Fire Service’s Director of Operations is leading rescue efforts on the ground, while heavy-duty equipment has been mobilised to help remove debris and gain access to inaccessible sections of the building.
As investigations into the cause of the collapse are expected to begin, the incident is likely to reignite discussions about adherence to building regulations, construction supervision, and public safety measures at active construction sites across the country.
Meanwhile, rescue personnel continue working tirelessly to locate and extract any remaining survivors.
