Ghana’s Interior Minister, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has advised residents of Accra to work from home following severe rainfall that has caused flooding and disrupted movement across parts of Ghana’s capital, Accra.
The minister said the decision was based on weather forecasts indicating that more rainfall could hit the city, increasing the risk of further flooding.
“Based on what the meteorological department is telling us, we expect it to be heavier if the prediction of more rains from Togo gets here, so please, stay home, work from home,” he said during an interview on Joy FM.
He advised workers who had already arrived at their workplaces to remain there until conditions improved, while those yet to leave home should consider working remotely.
Mr Mohammed-Mubarak also called on employers in both the public and private sectors to adopt flexible working arrangements to allow business activities to continue safely.
He encouraged organisations to move non-essential meetings online and postpone urgent engagements where necessary.
“Private and public meetings that are not too urgent, we can have them on Zoom and those that are very urgent, we can postpone them,” he said.
The call comes as emergency teams respond to flooded roads, heavy traffic congestion and other challenges caused by the downpour.
The minister praised the efforts of emergency agencies, including the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the Ghana Armed Forces, the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana Navy and the National Fire Service, for their response.
He urged the agencies to work closely together to ensure a coordinated response to the flooding situation.
“Please let us work together, let us operationalise the thing as one unit,” he added.
