Abdul-Samed Sulemana, popularly known as “Awuche”, the 33-year-old believed to be Ghana’s tallest man, has died at the Tamale Teaching Hospital.
Family sources confirmed to Kumasimail that Awuche passed away on Monday, July 27, 2026, bringing to an end a long and difficult battle with gigantism and related health complications that had drawn national attention in recent weeks.
His death comes just days after doctors at the Tamale Teaching Hospital reviewed his condition and reversed an earlier recommendation to amputate his left leg.
Initially referred from the Baptist Medical Centre in Nalerigu with a severe infection in his left leg, Awuche had been informed that amputation was the only viable option to save his life.
However, following a comprehensive reassessment by specialists at the Tamale Teaching Hospital after his admission, doctors concluded that the limb would not be amputated and instead recommended an alternative course of treatment.
The reassessment followed the intervention of Ghanaian businessman , who had pledged to fully finance Awuche’s medical treatment after learning of his plight.
Earlier this month, Kumasimail reported that Awuche had appealed for financial assistance after he was unable to remain at the hospital because he could not afford the cost of treatment. His story sparked widespread public sympathy and calls for support.
Responding to the appeal, Ibrahim Mahama committed to paying all medical expenses associated with Awuche’s treatment and recovery. His Special Aide, Rafik Mahama, subsequently announced that the businessman had engaged the management and medical team of the Tamale Teaching Hospital and assured Awuche and his family of continued support throughout his treatment.
Despite those efforts and the renewed optimism generated by the revised medical assessment, Awuche’s condition deteriorated, leading to his death on Monday.
News of his passing has triggered an outpouring of grief across social media, where Ghanaians have been paying tribute to the late Awuche.
Many described him as a humble, gentle and soft-spoken man whose warm personality endeared him to everyone who encountered him.
Others said his resilience and determination in the face of years of health challenges served as an inspiration, praising the courage with which he confronted his illness.
A native of Gambaga in the North East Region, Awuche became widely known because of his extraordinary height, believed by many to make him Ghana’s tallest man. Beyond his remarkable stature, he became a symbol of perseverance as he endured years of living with gigantism while facing significant medical and financial challenges.
His death has left many Ghanaians mourning the loss of a man whose story united people across the country in compassion and hope.
