“Hello Mr. Ibrahim Mahama, When I heard that you paid the $40,000 kidney transplant cost in India for me, I was shocked and so happy at the same time. Because of you, I have a new kidney. Thank you for giving me the chance of a future and to go back to school. I promise I will never forget your kindness. One day when I grow up, I will also want to help others the way you helped me. May God bless you abundantly for your kindness. Nyame Nyirawo oma wo Nkwatenten.”
Those were the words of 13-year-old Jeffery Adjei Boakye as he expressed his gratitude to businessman and philanthropist Ibrahim Mahama after successfully undergoing a kidney transplant in India.
Jeffery, a Grade Seven pupil of Zion Praise Educational Complex at Maduma in the Ashanti Region, underwent the life-saving surgery on July 24, 2026, after Mr. Mahama provided the full $40,000 required for the procedure.
The donation came just six days after Jeffery’s medical condition was highlighted by GHOne TV’s Ashanti Regional Correspondent, Isaac Justice Bediako, on April 10, 2026, across EIB Network platforms.
According to Jeffery’s mother, Jenet Koraman Kumi, her son is responding positively to treatment and medication following the successful surgery.
She said the family remained hopeful about his recovery despite the medical challenges that accompanied the transplant.
Battle with kidney disease
Jeffery had been battling end-stage kidney disease and was receiving treatment at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), where medical specialists determined that a kidney transplant offered his best chance of survival.
Before the transplant, he underwent haemodialysis three times a week to manage his deteriorating kidney function.
His mother had appealed publicly for financial assistance after doctors advised that the transplant was urgently needed.
Mrs. Kumi explained that Jeffery was born prematurely with congenital abnormalities affecting his urinary tract. According to her, the condition gradually progressed into chronic kidney disease and eventually developed into end-stage renal failure affecting both kidneys.
With the family unable to raise the substantial amount required for the transplant, Jeffery’s condition was brought to public attention through the media.
Ibrahim Mahama intervenes
The media report attracted the attention of Ibrahim Mahama, who subsequently stepped in to finance the entire procedure.
He provided $40,000 to cover the cost of the kidney transplant in India, enabling medical preparations and arrangements for Jeffery to travel for the surgery.
Medical personnel at KATH subsequently facilitated the preparations for his treatment abroad.
Following the successful operation, Mrs. Kumi expressed profound appreciation to Mr. Mahama, describing his intervention as a life-saving gesture that had given her son another opportunity at life.
She also thanked GHOne TV and journalist Isaac Justice Bediako for highlighting Jeffery’s condition, saying the media coverage was instrumental in attracting the assistance that eventually made the transplant possible.
Hope for a new future
Although Jeffery remains vulnerable to infections because of his weakened immune system, his doctors are optimistic about his recovery following the transplant.
For the young pupil, the successful surgery represents more than a medical procedure. It offers him the opportunity to return to school and pursue his ambitions after months of battling a serious illness.
In his message of appreciation, Jeffery promised that he would remember Mr. Mahama’s kindness and, when he grows up, hopes to extend similar help to others in need.
His experience has also highlighted the potential impact of media advocacy and philanthropy in helping vulnerable patients access critical medical care.
For Jeffery and his family, the successful transplant marks a new chapter—one defined by renewed hope, recovery and the possibility of returning to a normal childhood.
