A group of cocoa farmers in the Ahafo Ano South West District has called on the public to avoid politicising issues in Ghana’s cocoa sector, describing the recent reduction in producer prices as a global challenge rather than a failure of domestic policy.
At a press conference held in the district, the convenor of the group, Edward Kwame Yeboah the 2025 National Best Cocoa Farmer said while the price adjustment from GH¢3,600 to GH¢2,500 per bag is painful, farmers have accepted the decision in good faith to safeguard the long-term sustainability of the industry.
Speaking on behalf of about 500 cocoa farmers in the district, Kwame Yeboah said the group believes supporting the government during the current downturn will help restore stability, ensure timely payments, and strengthen the sector for future growth.
He emphasised that cocoa remains a cornerstone of Ghana’s economy and should be managed with unity and shared responsibility rather than partisan division.
However, the farmers appealed to the government to introduce a policy guaranteeing that 70 percent of cocoa revenue goes directly to producers, with the remaining 30 percent allocated to the state. According to the group, such a legal framework would protect farmers’ interests across successive administrations and promote fairness, respect and dignity for cocoa producers nationwide.
They also urged authorities to promptly adjust producer prices upward whenever world market prices rise, arguing that timely increases would motivate farmers and help sustain productivity in the sector.
The group reaffirmed its commitment to supporting government policies aimed at promoting transparency, efficiency and stability within Ghana’s cocoa industry.
